[These are the rough notes of a talk given by Shaykh Kamaluddin Ahmed in Karachi on Saturday, September 15, 2012]
Some Practical Tips For Getting Qalb-e-Saleem
1. Get rid of unlawful love
We should remove any and every unlawful love from our hearts. It is said about Majnu’ that he made du’a to Allah (swt) that I make tawbah from every sin except for the love for Laila. If we look into our own lives everyone has a different form of laila in their hearts. For some it is fame, prestige, popularity, repute. For others it is wealth. For some it is love for ghayr-mehram. Analyze your own heart and start extracting all the unlawful loves you have gathered there. When you get rid of unlawful love, your heart will get filled with love for Allah (swt).
2. Be aware of Allah (swt)
Qalb-e-saleem is dhakir – it is always remembering Allah (swt).
Quran: Verily only in the remembrance of Allah do the hearts find rest. [13:28]
Hadith: Verily, everything has a polish and the polish of the heart is the remembrance of Allah the Exalted. [Shu’ab al-Imān]
3. Repent from every sin
If you fall into sin then make tawbah from it immediately. For example, if you miss your fajr, instead of delaying, excusing yourself, or avoiding the guilt, make tawbah and pray its qadha immediately. Make it a part of your routine to do istighfar on a daily basis. Also repent from your laziness every time there is a slack or lapse in obligations of deen.
4. Value your free time
Be mindful of where you spend your time. It is a limited commodity, like a traveler has limited resources so they use it calculatedly. We are also travelers in this world with a limited amount of time. Anytime death can come and snatch it away from us. Even if we get to live for a hundred years, sooner or later that time too will come to pass.
5. Be mindful in your Salah
When a person with a pure heart makes takbir in their salah, they forget the world and the center of their focus becomes Allah (swt) alone. You will not be able to attain this level of awareness overnight. It requires a lot of hard work, dedication and disciplining. All of us gathered here today, we do pray Alhamdulillah, we are not be-namazi per se. When you are praying anyway then why not do it with more concentration? Salah is one of the most important pillars of Islam and its importance has been emphasized many times.
Quran: Establish Salah for My remembrance. [20:14]
If we are not remembering Allah (swt) then we are not doing it right. We are the kind of people who are purpose-driven, so we should also try to fulfill the purpose of Salah.
Start with your sujud. Even if you cannot fix every sujud, at least make it your goal to pray one tasbeeh in every sujud with full awareness.
